Welcome to my site!
My name is Carter Thomson and I am currently a Highlights Producer and Associate Producer at the NFL Network. I am passionate about sports as a broadcaster, analyst and of course as a fan. I am an aspiring play-by play sports broadcaster and it is something I have been working towards for over 10 years now and can’t wait to become one soon.
I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and have been broadcasting and writing about sports since the beginning of high school. I first joined the school news team to do weekly updates on how the past week went for each sports team. I was also able to get in contact with the local television station through my school and broadcast a few of the varsity girls basketball games to tape which was an amazing experience to have to prepare and broadcast for something that would later air on TV, was truly unique and special. My Dad even helped me get on the radio in high school by letting me be the voice of many of his radio commercials for his small business. These were some of my first opportunities in sports broadcasting and what really started my journey into the sports broadcasting and entertainment industry.
In college I attended the University of Wisconsin Madison where I joined the schools radio station, WSUM 91.7 FM Madison, and began the play-by-play broadcasting multiple Badger sports from football and basketball to hockey and volleyball. My first Badger Football broadcast was in 2017, our homecoming game when they faced off against the Maryland Terrapins and its one I’ll never forget for a multitude of reasons. From an early pick-6 by the Badgers defense to a blowout 38-10 win. The most memorable thing I’ll take away from that game though is the award I was somehow able to walk away with when I submitted that demo to the IBS (Intercollegiate Broadcasting System) at the end of the semester. Not really expecting much to come from it but when my then radio director gave me a call on a random college weekday, I can still remember just the pure emotions and excitement I felt, and a little bit of the validation that I thought I needed, that I was on the right path and this was something I could do. My first broadcast came in 1st place for the IBS Football Play-by-Play award, and I haven’t looked back since then. One of the more special moments when I received that award and realized that I was in the right business. My only regret is that I didn’t find the student radio station sooner!
While play-by-play broadcasting I was also able to host a radio show called The Final Final that aired every Thursday from 5-6 pm and also streaming online on the WSUM Online Stream. My co-host Noah Clark and I would discuss the hot topics of the week, give our predictions for upcoming sporting events, among many other things. We would start by discussing the University teams such as Badger Football, or Basketball and work our way up to the national media discussions. Whether that be the Green Bay Packers or the upcoming NFL draft. The chemistry that Noah and I had was fantastic I thought given we had also never met each other before starting this radio show. My senior year, I then became the Sports Director at WSUM and inherited many responsibilities including hosting WSUM’s longest running sports show, The Student Section which aired every Tuesday morning from 8-9 am. I was also an integral part of launching podcasting at the radio station where I started the first sports podcast there by taking the long standing radio show and bringing it to podcast form. Becoming sports director allowed me to be even more involved with the radio station from maintaining the other 8-10 sports shows we had on air during my time, to reaching out to University officials to maintain relationships with the station so we could continue to broadcast as many sports matches as possible while also getting the opportunity to travel for some big events. A football game at the “Big House” in Michigan, Big Ten Tournaments for basketball and football, bowl games, etc. It gave me the opportunity to help grow the sports department that gave me my opportunity in sports broadcasting which was amazing to do. You can visit the WSUM Website to learn about the radio station.
I now work at NFL Network producing highlights of Sunday games while also keeping pace with the day-to-day news weekly by creating visual content to help tell the storylines we are trying get across on live TV. I also record The Final Final podcast which I host, edit and produce myself. I came up with the name in college (hence the name of our radio show) with help from my Dad and a bunch of his friends. I record episodes 1-2 times per week ranging on daily sports topics to fun personal stories of mine where I give my own personal opinions. You can listen to the The Final Final podcast on either Spotify (The Final Final Podcast on Spotify) or on Apple Podcasts. I hope you enjoy it!
Please enjoy my website where you can find all my podcast episodes, some articles I have written in my free time and my demo play-by-play broadcasts that I have posted on here. Feel free to leave comments on the contact page and check out other portions of my website as well. I am currently looking to become a play-by-play sports broadcaster once again. Enjoy!
